A shore excursion in Egypt is often a long day with a lot of sun, sand and stone underfoot. A little preparation makes it far more comfortable. Here is what we suggest packing in your day bag.

Clothing

  • Light, breathable layers that cover shoulders and knees. They protect you from the sun and are respectful at religious sites.
  • For mosque visits, such as the Mosque of Muhammad Ali at the Cairo Citadel, shoulders and knees should be covered, and women are asked to cover their hair. A light scarf is the easiest solution.
  • Comfortable, closed walking shoes with good grip. Tomb entrances have ramps and steps, and many sites have uneven paving or sand.
  • A hat or cap for the open sites, which have little shade.

In your day bag

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A refillable water bottle (bottled water is provided in the vehicle on our itineraries)
  • Small Egyptian pound notes for tips, toilets and small purchases
  • Any personal medication
  • Your ship card and the ID your cruise line asks you to carry ashore
  • A charged phone with your ship's port agent number saved

Photography rules vary from site to site, and some tombs and museums have their own conditions. Your guide will tell you what is allowed at each stop.

What to leave on board

Leave valuables you will not need and large bags in your cabin. Some sites have security checks, and a light bag makes them quicker. Drones are generally not allowed at archaeological sites without a permit.

Pacing the day

Long excursions such as Luxor from Safaga or Cairo from Port Said include several hours in the vehicle. Eat a good breakfast, drink regularly, and tell us in your enquiry about any mobility needs: we will advise honestly on what is comfortable and adapt the route where we can.

Plan your day with us

Tell us your port, date and ship times. We reply with an itinerary and a quote. An enquiry is not a booking.
